Gossip Galore? – More like Gossip no more!

“Haha, look at what he’s wearing!”, “I know right. Cheap to the max!”, “Can she just not?!
She’s’ so not funny! LOL!”

Backbiting, I’m sure at least more than a handful of you have either
heard this, or been the ones to do it. No matter how much you defend yourself by saying “It’s not
like they can hear me.”, “So what, I’m not hurting them. Do you see any wounds?” but that’s not
the point.

You talking bad about someone else behind their back isn’t just hurting them but it’s
also hurting you. You’re making yourself get used to the fact that backbiting is okay. You’re
making it a norm when it shouldn’t be. That’s not JUST ruining your own personality but the
other people who are around you, because whether you know it or not, the actions and words
you say and do will end up making an impact. Whether it’s a positive one or a negative.

However, there’s people who say things like this “Okay…that’s nice to know, but I don’t really care! I’m
mean! Get used to it!” Well, okay. But why are you mean? Do you find it funny making fun of
someone else? Do you think it’s cool? Is being mean a new trend? Is this what you want to
stand for? Don’t people realize that you’re not just making fun of a classmate but you’re also
making fun of someone’s child. Someone’s brother or sister, someone’s significant other,
someone’s loved one!

How would they feel if they heard you speaking ill about someone they
care for? How would YOU feel if someone was doing the same to someone YOU care about!?
You would feel hurt. You would feel sad. You would question why they were doing it. Did that
person do something to you? What did they do wrong? Maybe they’re different? Or maybe they
didn’t match this society’s standards so you found it funny and decided to make statements
behind their back. And of course not just any statements. The rudest ones you could possibly
think of.

We have to stop this problem in our society. We have to raise our voices for those in
their absence. If we all call out people whenever they speak ill of someone then that will reduce
the number of people who backbite.

If we stand united and raise our voices in sync then this
problem is as good as solved. Let’s make this norm become an outcast in our society. Starting
here! Starting at this school, and starting now! We have to not just care about the footprint we
leave behind on the planet but start caring about the footprint we leave behind on each other.
