Anybody could take the plot of a feel-good family friendly movie and leave it as that. But how many people would be willing to take the plot and go further with it? Making the plot, effects, and theme deeper, having that movie go further than just moving frames on a screen.

Well, one answer to that question would be director Zoe Leigh Hopkins’ film Kayak to Klemtu. This Canadian movie is about a 14-year-old girl who Kayaked 500 km to Klemtu to attend a hearing in place of her recently deceased environmentalist uncle. She wanted to make the case that the ecosystem is under threat if oil tankers entered the waters off Great Bear Rainforest near her home in British Columbia. If she fails to help raise awareness of the problems the tankers can potentially cause, then the recovering populations of humpback whales, Spirit bears and Pacific coastal wolves may disappear from this unique ecosystem.

This movie deals with grief, self-discovery, family drama and environmental issues and is an incredibly good movie to watch. Overall, I enjoyed this movie because it is educational, and has an enjoyable plot that I have never seen done before. This movie can be found on the STARZ network (part of CRAVE) as well as CBC Gem for free. It is an incredible movie and would recommend you check it out!
