We as humans are guaranteed rights, which make up the way we are allowed to live and act on a day to day basis. We have the right to life, to live and breathe as we please. The right to a fair trial in court, without prejudice and bias against us. The right to privacy and the right to vote. We have the right to freedom of expression, freedom of religion, and freedom from torture, inhuman or degrading treatment.
And we cannot take these rights for granted, for they haven’t always been set in stone for everyone.
Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10th, to commemorate the day that the United Nations Assembly formed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The document, translated into 500 different languages, proclaims the inalienable rights to which everyone is entitled to as a human being, regardless of religion, sexuality, race, ethnicity, or language. Not only do these rights protect every human being regardless of who they are, but are extremely important to the history of what makes us human.
This year, the theme is equality- reducing inequalities and advancing human rights even further.
Human rights are basic rights that should belong to us all simply because we are human. They embody key values in our society such as fairness, dignity, equality and respect. And it’s important that we continue to talk about human rights, and how they have evolved over the past hundreds of years.
As Human Rights Day is right around the corner, start to recognize how you and others can uphold these rights. Speak up for what you care about. Start conversations with family and friends about important matters and headlines in the news. Talk about local events and protests. If you are able to, volunteer or donate to a global organization that protects and aids minorities and groups who are currently in need. UNICEF is an amazing nonprofit that supports human rights around the world!
Choose ethically made and fair trade items when purchasing gifts for your loved ones. Fair trade and ethical products follow strict guidelines for giving workers living wages, safe working conditions, and environmental respect.
Another amazing thing you can do to reflect on human rights is to always listen to others. There is so much power in listening and understanding someone else’s way of life and how they got to where they are now. The Universal Declaration of Rights was only declared seventy-three years ago. It’s important that we empower survivors and people facing injustices by honouring and respecting their stories.
And most importantly, always stand up against discrimination. Each and everyone of us has the power to use our voices and help others when they need it most- don’t just be a witness, but be an activist and a friend. When we all come together, we are more empowered against injustices in the workplace or in the classroom.
And together, we can uplift each other and celebrate the rights that make us human.
