Diversity is one of those subjects that is both obvious and a challenge, a moral notion and a rational act, a theme of society as well as of business. It is also a gallery of words in which everyone projects onto in their own way, both in definition and in membership.

There is an extreme difference while comparing CSS now and CSS about three to four years ago. Now, the school has different people from distinct cultural backgrounds as well as others with different sexualities and gender expressions. This should be exciting, but in this case, it is the other way around.

Students from different races and students with different identities try to hide themselves to fit in with the school’s community, just because they do not feel accepted and welcomed in the school. Imagine being made fun of because of your difference. We do not get the chance to choose our identity, it is just how we were naturally made. If we did have the chance, we certainly would not choose to be made fun of, or seen as “different.” Students who have English as their second language find it exceedingly difficult to participate in class conversations and some students go as far to say, “Your bad English,” which they may have said as a joke, but it really hurts.

No more words, It is time to announce our new club called the Humans of CSS. Our club focused on diversity, aims to bring together students interested in diverse cultures, gender and sexual orientations. It is also to create a safe space to share their experiences, as well as to teach others about our identities, so that we can work together to make the school a place welcome to all.

If you are interested in joining the Humans of CSS to help promote equality within our school, please talk to Mrs. Cameron or Mrs. Loungheed for more information!! We meet Tuesday’s at lunch in the art room!
